1. what is STEEL about?

** STEEL is a web site intent on providing two things:

-Advanced and usefull library modules, scripts, and documentation to help your everyday life as a REBOL programmer.

-A growing list of applications implemented using these libraries. These are in the new (reTools) section.

2. Welcome Back!

Its been a while since Steel was online!

This is a new effort in bringing my tools closer to the community. In the next few weeks, you will see a lot of releases of libraries, tools and documentation.

I've done all I can to keep the site as clean, consistent, usefull and easy to browse as possible.

Note that the whole site is generated using reMark technology wich is one of my reTools for which the documentation and latest release is in preparation as part of this new initiative.

3. SUPPORT and Questions

Support should be addressed to me on the REBOL mailing list or the REBOL3 AltMe world, its free. To get an altme login, just ask for one on the REBOL mailing list or REBOLtalk online forum, someone will reply with a logon. Its important to give full name, email and nickname...

You can go here to read many discussion threads from the altme world.

4. Focus of Steel

I remain focused to helping developpers themselves, thus many of the tools on this site are aimed at coding or enabling specific yet unavailable features within REBOL.

Another aspect of this site is to share many of the simple applications I have built using REBOL. This collection of tools, I affectionately call the "retools".

I also want to state that the site will now be much more lively, with no open-ended menus and more focused and details documentation.

Every link will now be usefull, and I will only add and release tools online, once there is sufficient data, or documentation for it to be minimaly usefull to someone at large.

5. A retrospective

When I look back at the several years I have been active in the REBOL community, I realize that a lot has happened, a LOT of HIGH quality code and tools have been released. Even more so in the latest months.

Yet strangely, REBOL seems stuck in place. We constantly start over, there is lack of accumulation. More needs to be done by the community, if this rich and ultra-productive development platform is to be more mainstream. This does not mean all working together trying to pretend one solution is perfect.

Rather, what HAS been done, has to be better organized and compiled, so that newcommers, and old-timers alike can re-use and move on. ADDing stuff alternatives are always welcome, but they are only usefull when people are aware of them.

The steps announced for REBOL v3 will definitely help in making REBOL itself, more industry capable, but it still needs toolsets, and an organised, if not collaborative community.

With this in mind, I have decided to reactivate my participation in the release of tools, documentation, tips and tricks. I have also revised my direction wrt licensing in general.

What changed? well, I have tons of very usefull and advanced code which is being basically sitting on a HDD, waiting to be challenged.

Have fun!
